Guitar Hero 5 Forces Mandatory Wii System Update

Guitar Hero 5 Nintendo Wii retail case

Nintendo Wii owners should be aware that Guitar Hero 5 will force a mandatory Wii System Update before the game will register on the Wii Channel.  This is particularly of concern to anyone running the "Homebrew Channel" or other third party modifications.

Upon loading the disc, I was surprised to see a "Wii System Update" icon instead of a "Guitar Hero 5" icon on the Wii Disc Channel. That's when I realized that unless you accept this update, you cannot play Guitar Hero 5.  Here's a series of photos showing the warnings:

Wii Channel showing Wii System Update instead of Guitar Hero 5

You don't get a whole lot of choice when it comes to this update:

Mandatory Wii System Update

The warning reads:

IMPORTANT: If your Wii console includes unauthorized modifications, this update may detect and remove unauthorized content causing immediate or delayed inoperability of your console.  Failure to accept this update may also render this and future games unplayable.  If you do not wish to accept this update, you can hold down the POWER button for 4 seconds.

So if you want to play the game, you have to allow this update to rummage through your files and delete anything it doesn't like.  Huh?

Now to be fair, this isn't necessarily anything unique to Guitar Hero 5, but rather something that can happen with any new Wii game that comes bundled with a mandatory Wii System Update.

I'm a sworn enemy of DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) in all its forms, and I find it really obnoxious, inappropriate, and unwarranted when you find yourself being bullied into letting a company rummage through your files and delete anything they don't like.

Now, there certainly may be a legitimate new function required by Guitar Hero 5 that this update installs to allow the game to function.  That's fine.  It's the part about "detecting and removing unauthorized content causing immediate or delayed inoperability of your console" that I have a problem with.  What gives them the right to search and destroy files on the rest of my system, outside of their game files?  It's my property.

Reluctantly, I installed the update.  (I don't run Homebrew so theoretically shouldn't have anything to worry about.) I am running Wii System v4.0U and the Guitar Hero 5 mandatory update installed in about 3 seconds and then required a reboot of the Wii.  Surprisingly, after rebooting I found that my Wii remained at v4.0U.  The newest version, v4.1 has been available since July 15th, 2009, but I've deliberately avoided installing it.  This leaves me to wonder – what exactly did Guitar Hero 5 actually update?  Was this just a front to inspect my system for pirated software?  It's impossible to say.

Finally the game is ready to play.

What do you think about games requiring this type of mandatory update and "system shakedown"?

The update installed the function for streaming content directly from the SD card. Right now only GH5 will use it for the DLC, but in the near future Nintendo could (and should) unlock the option to stream VC and Wiiware games thus freeing 300 blocks from the main Wii memory and reducing the amount of copy cycles wasted every time you change games on the SD card channel.

EdEN, thank you for making this interesting point.  Do you have a source for this claim?  I would like to update the article and link to it, if possible.

Guitar Hero Metallica for Wii also prompts for update, too. I did the update and it did not update my firmware (system menu), and it did not remove my s*ftmods, my Wii is still at 3.2U, and all is well with s*ftmods. So are you sure that the update on GH5 is going to remove any user mods? The way I see it, every GH game installs update to recognize instruments and microphone, and other various functions like EdEN mentioned.

I would like to know if Guitar Hero 5 update is safe for s*ftmod Wii's.

I got GH5 today. Took the plunge and went ahead and installed the update. As far as I can see, all the s*ftmods I had are still OK.

    Phew.

can anyone confirm that GH5 doesn't update any versions of wii firmware/system menu?

like 3.2U remains 3.2U after update
    3.3U remains 3.3U after update,
4.0U remains 4.0U after update, etc..

or is it only for certain versions after a certain revision?

In the article I state that I had 4.0U before GH5, and after the GH5 "update", it remained at 4.0U.  So clearly, GH5 does not force the current 4.1 update.

Hi all, i bought an original copy of GH5.
I don't want to do the update. So i update some I0S like the 38,53,55,56.
But on the disc channel is still remaining the update adv.

    I'm running on a fw 3.4E s*ftmodded with cI0S rev10 di Waninoko.

I recently bought GH5.  I have been using 4.2U.  I don't run homebrew.  However, I would like to point out it still forced an update, and after the update my wii no longer detects my wireless router (a cisco/linksys WRT110)…which has pissed me off to no end.  Most of my neighbors' wireless connections disappeared as well.  I only see one faint, secure connection when I had many strong secure/non-secure connections earlier.  What is going on?  Why break wireless router compatibility for a game?  I've tried resetting everything.  Other devices such as my laptop see the router just fine.  Whatever that update did, it borked my wii's ability to detect my router…

This is not an appropriate site for trading tips on hacking your Wii.

Any further comments of this nature will be deleted, so please take this discussion elsewhere.

Feel free to discuss the intrusive nature of mandatory DRM and the system "shakedown", as that's the topic of this post.

This kind of stuff has made up my mind not to buy any of the new gen consoles. I'm a strictly offline play kind of person. Sad that I can only play games from yesteryear for this reason.

this isn´t a "forced" update, it´s a simple update to install IOS56 (google it) to run Guitar Hero 5!

guitar hero 5 has system menu 3.4 update (:

The Update installs something called a cIOS ( cIOS56-64-v5146-rev14) a Input output system that allows the user (you) to use streaming SD content and some other new features so it dose not do anything t you know what but it is required
